On and on and on it goes, with polarities and divisions to ensure that we know that as much as we may be similar, we’re also verrrry different – and yet the same. And yet Unique. And yet One. And yet Individual (person, nation, continent). And yet Community.
Individuality? Unity? Which one is it? Because the ping-pong of this sing-song is driving us crazy.
Maybe you live in Brexit. Or Cameroon. Or Ohio. But oh how I hope that the sky over there stays where it is, because my air belongs to my nation and my people and my ideas, language, food, friends, family, and so on.
But how can you divide Air, much less fairly? Or Water? Yet we do, declaring national airspace and waterways with military repercussions if we abuse these international territorial demarkations. Which in doing might one day be our global undoing.
What if we’re not who we think we are? Or who others tell us we are? What if we’re not Either / Or, but More?
What if we’re AND?
If we’re more than Either / Or might that rob us of our unique attributes, our specialness? No more than roses and tulips. Yet for some reason Human Nature’s ego has yet to understand how to gently bow to its intrinsic life partner, Nature, and grok that we’re all one species (like Flower) within which are wonderful varieties (like Lily, Cactus, etc.). Each thrives in a different climate which allows it to flourish in its specific loveliness. Some varieties need arid conditions, as water will kill them. Some need shade, as sunlight will wilt them. Some need the cool and some need the heat.
But since when did one flower force another to adapt to its fragrance within the Flower species?
Humankind is different. Humankind must abide by its nation’s competitive collective ego-system which is often a reflection of its Leadership … which is often a reflection of its Citizenship … all of which is a ship-of-fools in defiance of its natural ecosystem whose instinctive impulses Humankind learned to intellectually override.
To a large extent we are trained not to like certain humans in favour of others. And to a detrimental extent we dismiss the human closest to us with whom we share an intimate lifetime together and with whom we are never officially introduced. Our Self.
Self is constantly sabotaged by a barrage of input from billions of other anonymous Selves who are under the same warring influence – one which grips nearly all of us in opposing impulses of Community versus Individuality. And this fuels Duality.
But what if every human is bits of all and then some? What if the smallest granules of Me are also embedded in You and She and He and They and We? And what if this collective symphony doesn’t diminish us individually? Maybe we need to soften our perceptual edges just enough to see that we can co-exist Individually and Collectively, without imposing our fear of identity loss on anybody.
Genetics tells us that about 99% of everyone is the same. So in that infinitesimal 1% of our 7.8 billion does the fate of our Ego remain. And still more stirring: what if all these bits of “us” scattered about Planet E – Planet WE – are part of a still greater universal dust that seeded us when Earth was formed from fragments of explosive star matter gazillions of years before? Would that put this fractured notion of WE into a more acceptable visual of Humanity? Or of a Cosmic Insanity?
Our Global Identity Crisis is at a slippery slope. Tech Connect has also spawned Disconnect – and in this “prearranged marriage” of Life On Earth there surfaces understandably long-held cultural resentments that have further escalated, exacerbated by social media which casts it all in full view of the troubled side of our “Global Selfie”.
A key element to the National, Cultural, and Global Identity Crisis is sensitivity. Sensitivity to History. Sensitivity to Community. Sensitivity to Individuality. Sensitivity to Diversity. Sensitivity to the complex human that lives within our Humanity … And becoming aware that our sensitivity to our collective naivety about the world around us – and within us – is a learning curve being foisted upon everyone worldwide, consciously or otherwise.
If cultures and individuals within those cultures were truly appreciated and even honoured – both within their cultures and also on the global stage … if governments led their nations with power fuelled by grace and a loving hand like the benevolent parent figures most of us have never had … perhaps that would ease the tensions. Perhaps we’d be less sensitive to nuance as offensive and more adaptable to one another because we know we’re inherently loved and valued.
Self Worth multiplied by 7.2 billion. This is the caring theme woven within a future televisionary event hoping to inspire appreciation of who we are individually, and collectively, simultaneously.
Hi Planet Person, Here’s the blog ‘n white … What if someone told you that you were related to everyone and everything on Earth – as well as the very Cosmos itself? You’d probably either tune in with further fascination or completely tune out, depending on which direction your cultural barometer was pointed. But…… Continue Reading
